Not just a passing phase …

Learning From God's Word

“I will praise the Lord all my life;
    I will sing praise to my God as long as I live” (Psalm 146:2).

Praising the Lord is not just to be a passing phase. We’re to keep on praising the Lord.

What are we to do when we feel like we’re tempted to give up on praising the Lord?

Let us remember our Saviour – Jesus. He didn’t give up on us. He went all the way to the cross for us.

As we remember our Saviour, may his love for us fill us with love for him

Jesus – the sure foundation for our faith and our life

Learning From God's Word

‘“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practiceis like a wise man who built his house on the rock.25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash”’ (Matthew 7:24-27).

Jesus speaks about two builders and two houses. He speaks with power. He speaks with authority.

“When Jesus had finished saying these things,the crowds were amazed at his teaching,29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers…

Building our faith and our life on Jesus …

Learning From God's Word

“My feet stand on level ground; in the great congregationI will praise theLord” (Psalm 26:12).

We build our faith and our life on Jesus Christ, the rock of our salvation. When we build our faith and our life on Jesus, he gives to us a song of praise to him.

“I waited patiently for the Lord;
    he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
    out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
    and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
    a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
    and put their trust in him” (Psalm 40:1-3).

A decision to make …

Learning From God's Word

‘The crowd was amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees said, “It is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons.”’ (Matthew 9:33).

Two very different responses to Jesus – the crowd praised him, the Pharisees criticized him. It’s still the same today – some welcome Jesus, others reject him. When we read about Jesus, each of us has a decision to make – Will we be like the crowd, or will we be like the Pharisees?

Lord, we feel like we’re making a right mess of things …

Lord, we feel like we’re making a right mess of things. Everything’s going wrong. This is the story of today’s world. It’s not just everybody else’s story. It’s our story. None of us can escape the truth – we’re sinners. Thank You, Lord – That’s only part of the truth concerning us. We are loved …

Praying Through God’s Word: 1 Kings 22:15-53

We read, Lord, about Ahaziah – “He …provoked the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger in every way that his father (Ahab) had done” (1 Kings 22:51-53). We read about Jesus– “I do as the Father commanded Me” (John 14:31). Help us, Lord, not to be like Ahaziah – he walked in the ways …
