“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NKJV)
Paul links rejoicing with prayer and thanksgiving. Thessalonians are instructed to pray regularly. Even the strictest priests of Judaism did not pray all day. Christians’ joy is not dependent on circumstances. It comes from what Christ has done, and it is constant.
“Pray without ceasing” means to have the attitude of praying throughout the day, not just in corporate worship or personal quiet times. Because of what God has done, we are continually thankful whatever the circumstances.
Those who trust God’s sovereignty and love can give thanks in every situation. All of us should live in a constant attitude of helpfulness, joy, prayer and thanks.
